Whenitcomestohandheldvideogameconsoles,fewnamesholdasmuchnostalgiaastheGameBoy.Releasedin1989,thisclassicdeviceallowedpeopletoplaygameson-the-go,longbeforemobilegamingwasathing.Butastheyearswentby,theGameBoyevolved,andwitheachiterationcamenewfeatures,improvedgraphics,andamoremodernfeel.However,notallGameBoyfanswerehappywiththesechanges,andeventually,oneofthemostvocalgroupsofdissenterswasborn:theLameboys.
TheBirthofaMovement
TheLameboyswereagroupofgamerswho,unlikemostfansoftheGameBoy,werenotinterestedinthelatestandgreatesthandhelddevices.Instead,theypreferredthesimplicityandcharmoftheoriginalGameBoy.Theysawitasapureformofgaming,wherethefocuswasonthegameplayratherthanflashygraphicsorgimmicks.
Atfirst,theLameboyswereseenasafringegroup,dismissedbymostgamersasbeingstuckinthepast.Butastimewenton,theirnumbersgrew,andtheybecameaforcetobereckonedwith.Theriseofmobilegamingonlymadetheirmessagemorepowerful,astheyarguedthattheGameBoywasthetrueprecursortomoderngaming,andthatallthenewtechnologieswerejustdistractions.
TheFallofLameboy
Forawhile,itseemedliketheLameboysmightactuallywin.Theyhadadevotedfollowing,andtheirmessageresonatedwithalotofgamers.Buteventually,thingsstartedtochange.TheGameBoywasnolongerthedominantplayerinthehandheldmarket,andevenNintendobegantodistanceitselffromthedevice.ThereleaseoftheGameBoyAdvancein2001wasaturningpoint,asitofferedamoresophisticatedgamingexperiencethatwassimplytoogoodtoignore.
Astheyearswentby,theGameBoywasphasedout,withmoreandmoregamersembracingnewerdevicesliketheNintendoDSandthePlayStationPortable.TheLameboyswereleftbehind,clingingtotheiroutdatedconsoles,andtheirmovementbegantolosesteam.BythetimetheGameBoywasdiscontinuedin2010,theLameboyswereallbutforgotten.
TheLegacyofLameboy
Despitetheireventualdownfall,theLameboysleftbehindalastinglegacy.Theyremindedusthatsometimes,simpleisbetter,andthatgameplayiswhatmattersmost.Theyalsoshowedusthatit'sokaytobenostalgicandappreciatetheclassics,eveninaworldwherenewtechnologiesareconstantlybeingdeveloped.Andperhapsmostimportantly,theyprovedthatevenasmallgroupofpeoplecanmakeabigimpact,ifthey'repassionateanddedicatedenough.
SowhiletheGameBoymaynolongerbethekingofthehandheldgamingworld,itwillalwaysholdaspecialplaceintheheartsofthosewhorememberitfondly.AndfortheLameboys,theirlegacyliveson,asareminderthatsometimes,it'sokaytobealittlebitlame.
